Hunter caught in quake epicentre When the big earthquake hit the region last Friday, Aniseed Valley resident Mike Buschl’s first reaction was “if it’s bad here, I hate to think what it’s like in Seddon.” Like many people, Mike thought the earthquake was probably centred at Seddon after the town was shaken by a 4.4 and 5.1 the previous day. But what Mike didn’t realise was that he was right at the epicentre of Friday’s 6.3 earthquake that was felt throughout Nel-

Guest speaker Peter Millward, the chief executive officer of the Nelson Provincial Museum, delivered the Anzac Day service address. He talked about the impact the war had on, not only the soldiers, but their families back home, with 2700 men and women from our province who served. He reiterated that we must remember those who died but also all those who served and their families. Ocean, Pacific and North African Coast. Hastings, who now lives at Oakwoods Retirement Village, has been attending the Richmond Anzac Day Service for around 18 years. “Today is a time to remember fellow servicemen and my brother who died in World War II,” he said. There were a number of servicemen at the ceremony, including those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the New Zealand services. World War II veteran Stan Daubney served with the Royal British Navy from 1943 to 1945 in the Mediterranean, Italy and Burma. He says it is a day for reflection. “I put the bad parts in the back of my head and remember the good parts.” The commemorations were marked with a flyover by pilot Bill Reid in his restored World

War II Avro Anson Mark One bomber. The younger generation also took part in the ceremony, with Waimea College, Richmond Primary School, Waimea Intermediate School and local Scouts, Cubs and Girl Guides involved. It was also a day to remember the Turkish community living in our region who also lost loved ones, with local ex-pat, Omer Babal Noray, reading a Turkish tribute to those Anzac’s who died at Gallipoli. Other services around the region also experienced huge numbers. In Nelson, the dawn service attracted around 7000 people to Trafalgar Park. While Brightwater, Tapawera, Murchison, Wakefield and Mapua all had good turn outs. For more photos from Anzac Day, turn to page 21.

Airport terminal plans take off

WEDNESDAY 29 April 2015

Nelsonians love to fly and the new head of the region’s airport says he is determined to give the region an airport to be proud of. Nelson Airport’s new CEO, Rob Evans, was appointed to the role in December, and he says it’s an exciting time to be appointed with a major expansion project of the airport terminal now underway. Last week, Studio Pacific Architects and Impact Project Management were appointed to the airport’s redevelopment project, a key step, says Rob. “It’s a good step. The reality is these things take time. It could be a year before we start building and two to three years before it will be finished, but it’s important that we consult as we go.” The new terminal will be planned to cope with growth for the next 20 years and Rob says it will include more space, better amenities, better toilets, a bigger Air New Zealand lounge, more efficient check-in and more retailers. He says the car parking at the airport also needs to be sorted but he’s looking forward to

So it’s a great time to be here and I’ve got three to five years of fun ahead of me.” With Kiwi Regional Airlines announcing they will be basing their crew in Nelson and with Sounds Air’s continued growth, Rob says the region is well supported. “In terms of airline companies, the more the merrier, but they need to be profitable. The good thing with KRA is that they’ve said they’ll stick to routes not serviced by Air New Zealand, so that will mean we’ll be

getting new markets, new routes and new passengers as opposed to just cannibalising existing routes. “Air New Zealand has a huge importance here and we need to work closely with them.” With a forecast 760,000 people flying in or out of Nelson Airport next year, Rob says passenger numbers will continue to grow. “It’s important to remember that people don’t fly to an airport. But we have a vested interest in airlines filling up their planes like they do. “Fortunately, we have a really fantastic tourism product, it’s a great part of the world and quite beautiful really.”

Missed water pipe costs TDC Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz A clerical “oversight” has cost the Tasman District Council thousands of dollars after it forgot to include an easement for one of the district’s biggest water pipes in a land sale last year. The council was aware of the water pipe that runs through a 5260 square metre property adjacent to the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond when it put that the land on the market in 2013. However, the easement was not created for the pipe when the land was sold to private developer Coman Holdings, leaving council and the surveyor to pay for the “oversight”. “The council was always aware of the pipe and we requested an easement be created as part of the survey work prior to sale,” council chief executive Lindsay McKenzie says. “But the easement for the water pipe wasn’t

The council and surveyors have shared the blame, and the land has since been resurveyed to include the easement with the surveyor picking up a proportion of the cost.”

Lindsay says the council’s share of the cost of resurveying the land was $1443 while the cost of preparing the easement plan of $920, which would usually be met by council, was met by the surveyor. The council also paid $70,000 for work on the site after the sale, to ensure the pipe

would not be damaged when the land was developed. However, Lindsay says it is likely that council would have had to pay for the work “even if everything had gone to plan” because it would have been factored into the land deal. “We had to meet the cost of ensuring that the developer could use the land to the maximum possible extent, so we paid $70,000 to have additional fill put over the pipe and put in a crib-wall. I’m concerned that the easement wasn’t identified, but one way or another, to get the sale over the line, we would have had to have done the work,” he says. Coman Holdings declined to comment on the issue, although told the Waimea Weekly earlier that they had purchased the land because it is ideally situated as a destination on the edge of Richmond, and because it was close to Stoke and two major retirement villages. An entranceway to the site, which is zoned for tourist services, has already been completed.

James Trowbridge hasn’t won a competition so exhilarating. The Stoke man won a hunting trip with Doughboy Safaris in Murchison to shoot a fallow stag. The competition was run by the Motueka Gun Shop. For every $100 spent in the shop last month, shoppers got one entry into the competition. James says it was an “awesome” experience. “It was magic. It was a really, really good day and in a beautiful spot.”

He bought a new rifle which gave him his entry in the competition and he says he felt like he won twice. “I already got a really good deal on the gun so to win this as well was a huge bonus.” James also took his son along, who also shot a deer. He says his buck was a “nice-looking animal” and was good eating. “I’d really like to say thanks to the Gun Shop and the boys at Doughboy, they were all really good. An amazing experience.”

DUN TRACK OPEN: A temporary track has been opened on the Dun Mountain Trail while work on the main track is still ongoing. The temporary track has been formed above the landslide which closed the track between Four Corners and Third House in March. The main track is still closed and, as the slip is actively moving, Council say a full reinstatement of the Dun trail is expected to take several months. This is due to the need for geotechnical design, resource consent, and construction works.

BOY TOLD TO PEE IN CUP: A man stopped a Nelson College student while he was walking down the street and forced him to urinate into a cup, it is alleged. Police confirmed they are investigating the incident but did not have any further details. Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea also confirmed the incident had occurred but was unwilling to provide further information. “A student was approached by a man. The boy is fine and we’re still trying to get to the bottom with police as to what occurred. It’s in their hands now,” he said. STOLEN CARAVAN FOUND: A caravan stolen from a North Rd home last week was recoverd by police at a Richmond home. Jenny and Ian Cunningham own the Avondale Harrier caravan which was stolen Thursday afternoon from their back section property. Jenny says she is glad police found the caravan but is upset that the thieves had trashed it inside and out. “Its an absolute mess, it’s been trashed and had nasty words spray-painted on the side” STOKE FIRE: A fire broke out at a Leicester St property just after 10pm on Friday night. One Plunket group has six sets of twins Monique Bergman

They say good things come in threes, but for six Nelson and Richmond mums who attend a rather special Plunket coffee group, it comes in twos. The mums, and some dads, and their twins, ranging in age from newborn to 21 months, attend the weekly multiple-birth meetings at the Richmond Plunket Rooms. The group was formed by Community Karitane to support the parents and help address the unique needs of families experiencing a multiple birth. Debbie Harvie from Community Karitane says the meetings are a relaxed and fun affair where parents can “have a cup of coffee and discuss day to day challenges of

raising twins”. She says it was formed after “we had a couple of mums in Stoke asking about a multiple-birth group” and now it has a loyal following. Mum Jodie Colvin says there is definitely a need for the group. Although Jodie says she treats her twins, seven-month-old Macie and Charlie, the same as the rest of her children, twins make simple things like going to the supermarket a major logistical operation. “Just moving two babies around can be difficult,” Jodie says. “You can’t just get out of the car and pick two babies up and carry them into the supermarket. “And you try pushing a twin stroller through the barriers they have there - you always have to go through the checkout.”

Rebecca Cooke, mother of Sophie and Madeline aged 21 months, says she enjoys going to group meetings because “it’s nice to talk to people who understand twins and find out how they cope and sort things out”. She says one of the key messages that all the mums agree on is that a supportive partner is essential. “Sophie and Madeline had colic so I had two screaming babies for the first 18 weeks. I would walk them around all day and then when my husband came home from work I’d hand them to him and he’d start walking - it would have been impossible on my own.” Keiko and Bruce Melton, parents of Emma and Kaori aged 11 months, say they have had to make some big changes since the twins were born. Bruce, who managed a

restaurant, “quit and got a day job” so he could be at home and help out at night. “Even getting out of the house on time to go somewhere is like a military operation,” Bruce says. Debbie says it is quite exceptional to have six sets of twins in the group at the one time, with multiple births making up only 1.5-2 per cent of all births in New Zealand. Last year there were 808 sets of twins and 11 sets of triplets born in this country. “There seems to be quite a few multiples births in the Nelson-Tasman area at the moment,” Debbie says. The multiple births group meets at the Richmond Plunket Rooms every Tuesday at 10.30am. Anyone interested in joining the group can call Debbie on 544 7554.

Students take on UN Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough students came together last Friday, to assume the role of international diplomats and discuss some of the world’s most important international issues. UN Youth New Zealand is a youth-foryouth, non-profit, volunteer organisation which aims to educate and inspire young New Zealanders through actions and events. Eighty-three students from around the region attended the event held at Nayland College. Students were given a country to represent before the conference commenced,

and during the course they debated opposing viewpoints and voted on a resolution that would be of benefit to each country. The theme for this year’s youth event was UN+Completed: The Millennium Development Goals. During the conference, delegates considered how much the UN has achieved with the previous development goals and how the UN refocuses their time and resources moving forward. Save the Children, Wednesday, April 15: It was a tight fit as people crowded into the Stoke Hall for the annual Save the Children Fair. The major fundraising event has been run since 1975 with the money generated going towards Save the Children projects here and overseas. Around 50 volunteers set up the hall on Friday before taking their places behind the stalls as buyers flocked to the event. This year the fair raised just over $8000 which will be going towards two projects. The first is working with Barnados at early learning centres in New Zealand and the second is in Nepal, improving the livelihoods of children who are forced to work instead of receiving an education. Artistic roller-skating, Wednesday, March 25: Mother and daughter artistic roller-skaters have returned from taking part in the Oceania Invitational Championships in Australia. Keiko Bamba and fifteen year old daughter Mitsuko Nam, competed in the event, which ran from April 7-10 and involved over 70 skaters. Keiko won a bronze medal in her Masters figure event, a result she says she is very proud of.

Members of Aspire Church, Katie Gray, Kent Longman, Matt Thomas, Wes Fox and Janine Thomas, will be part of the group travelling to Nepal to assist in the aftermath of the earthquake. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Locals off to help in Nepal

Jessie Johnston In the past five years, Matt Thomas has been to Nepal three times for the sole purpose of providing aid to locals living in tough conditions. This year was to be his fourth humanitarian journey, accompanied by a group of six others, to build a school in a village in the Baglung region. That was until news of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake tipped their plans upside down. “I think with the Haiti earthquake, and Japan, you see it on the news and it’s quite shocking, but knowing people on the ground is the difference. Having real life connections with around 100 people there, knowing them, knowing their families and the circumstances, and seeing a lot of that destroyed and people killed; its hugely impacting and I guess we’re just wrapped up in shock,” says Matt. The trip is still going ahead, but their focus has changed to helping out in some of the worst-affected

areas alongside their local friends and international aid organisations. As well as visiting the village where they were to build the school, the group will also be taking time to assess the damage in the Serei Village in the Gorkha District, close to the epicentre, Dhading and Syang in the Jomsom District, areas that Matt has previously been involved with. While the main aim has now shifted to rebuilding homes and minimising the damage that disease will now inflict, the funds for the original school project will be set aside for the future. “Our original plan was to go for several weeks, but I feel like it’s going to be more of a research trip to see what we can do, so that we can go back and really help. It’s going to be on-going for a long time, big earthquakes like this bring lots of sickness,” says Matt. They will be holding a quiz night at Aspire Church on May 7 from 7pm to help raise money for the cause. Teams can register by emailing matttzion@gmail.com before May 5.

SPCA pours money into de-sexing cats Simon Bloomberg

The Nelson SPCA is investing $24,000 in a de-sexing campaign to try and defuse the explosion in the number of unwanted cats, and manager Donna Walzl says it will be worth every cent. The SPCA operates a desexing caravan that tours around the country, it will be visiting the Nelson region in June and July. Donna says people will be able to have their cats desexed for a $20 donation, but the cost to the Nelson SPCA will be far more substantial.

“It’s going to cost us $24,000, so we’ll be fundraising to try and cover those costs,” Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl says. “It is a lot of money but it’s got to be money well spent - this will put a huge dent in the cat numbers. “We spend so much time here picking up the pieces and this is something we can do to really help the animals, which is why we all got into this job in the first place. It will help us make cats pets and not pests.” Donna says the desexing caravan has been to Nelson four times, with the last

we’ve got your

visit three years ago. The SPCA has been getting so many unwanted cats over the last two or three months that they decided to apply for it to return this year. Donna says the service is aimed primarily at cat owners who can’t afford to get them desexed, although it will accept some dogs. It is targeting a total of 500 cats during the two-month visit to Nelson. People who want to use the service will need to make a booking at the SPCA office at 379 Waimea Rd and produce a Community Services Card “or some proof of hardship”.

New walking cycleway 'fantastic': Congratulations to all concerned on the fantastic new walk/cycleway around the river. How could the council get this so right, and yet get Bridge St so wrong?? Those lovely wooden seats would have been great instead of the (now grub-

by) white lumps plonked in Bridge St, and as for the (now very grubby) blue lines, what the hell were they about? J. McIntosh.

The people who put the lights in and set the lanes and light changes up need to actually look at how the traffic flows and moves, or can’t move. The lights don’t work to the traffic flow. And what happened about the council plans for the Richmond bypass? Mike Roberts. Anzac Day service: Why on earth weren't the huge screens used for viewing the service, or a platform/ stage erected - so all of us standing, especially families with young children - could at least see what was going on? [I was] playing in the pipe band leading the parade, I think I have only ever missed one in the last 11 years. It was the best one I have been to. I enjoyed listening to all of the personal stories about our war heroes and the atmosphere of being alongside the white crosses amongst the crowds. The planes flying overhead were a nice touch, a bit of excitement for

Good idea to run Hill St through to Suffolk Rd. It would also gain another entrance to Saxton Field, helping with the congestion on Main Rd Stoke at large sports events. Bex Wiren.

to be a huge crowd attending! The speakers were inadequate - all of us standing couldn't hear or see anything, even when we moved back to the temporary seating, it was no better. Long before the service finished, and the parade marched off - a great number of people who were standing just left - no doubt, like the rest of us, disgusted and disappointed. My heart went out to the young families with school children, especially those students who have been doing projects and studies on family members who attended the war - a lot of these children have never attended a dawn parade, they were all complaining that they couldn't see or hear what was going on - what a letdown for them and us all, especially this being 100 years since WWI. Thankfully, the coverage on a lot of TV channels showed the events of WWI and other wars most of the day, and it was noticeable that the big screens were used at a lot of venues. Di King.

the children and adults in the crowd. Amanda Duncan. Very poignant. I liked the inclusion of Te Reo O Maori and the Turkish tribute spoken in their native tongue and English, very beautiful. The glowing white crosses in the pre-dawn dark bought a lump to throat. Very, very special! I think we did our ancestors proud, as they did us. Tracie Rolfe-Collins. Was an amazing turnout, a very moving tribute. Kat Campbell. I didn't go. I feel very ambivalent. I want to remember those poor men and their families and the horses too, and did in my own way....but what are our tears worth when we don't seem to have learned a damn thing? Jacqueline Gibson. Amazing turnout, it's a shame the whole parade didn't pass the crosses tho. I was lucky sitting where I was, it would have been great for the crowd to have had big screens and better sound system, but it's great Nelson had so many turnout. Stoneridge Stoneridge has long been admired as a picturesque wedding venue and it is now operating with that sole purpose in mind. Born from a passion for early New Zealand architecture, and using recycled materials where possible, Stoneridge was designed and brought to life by Steve and Jude Johnston before operating as a café for seven years. Often mistaken for a church, the building was originally a warehouse for the former Tasman Electric Power Board and over several years was transformed into the elegant period building you’ll see today. With its café years behind it, Stoneridge is now available for hire, offering the perfect venue for weddings, Christmas parties and other special occasions. Situated just 20 minutes from Nelson, 10 minutes from Richmond and Mapua and 5 minutes from Rabbit Island, this stunning venue lies in the heart of the Nelson region. Amongst its many impressive features is an intimate interior of warm, native woods, a sunny courtyard garden and four hectares of expansive parklike grounds and mature trees. The venue lends itself to a myriad of wedding styles from high teas and garden parties to formal, sit-down meals. However you want your wedding day to take shape, Jude and Steve will do everything they can to make it happen. Stoneridge can seat up to 60 guests inside and by utilizing the verandah and courtyard, more

guests can be accommodated. Alternatively, a marquee may be set up in the grounds for weddings and other events. What sets the venue apart, and continues to be an attraction for families, is the 42m2 Leyland Cyprus hedge maze. Used for children’s entertainment during the wedding day and always offering an opportunity for photos, the maze is also open to the public all year round when the building and grounds are not in use. Entry is only a gold coin per person which can be put in a collection box at the maze entrance, after which you are free to get lost within the hedges and if you’re lucky, find the middle. Take the time to visit Stoneridge and fall in love with the beautiful building and grounds. The venue is available for weddings and special occasions all year round and now is the perfect time to introduce yourself to Steve and Jude, talk to them about your marriage plans, and book your big day in time for the coming wedding season. To make a time to explore everything the venue has to offer, contact Jude on 544 0703 and leave a message, or email info@stoneridgeweddings.nz The first three couples to book their weddings with Stoneridge will receive a voucher for a free engagement shoot or 10 free album pages with Sandra Johnson Boutique Photography, valued at $395. In the meantime, like Stoneridge on Facebook at Stoneridge Weddings and Celebrations, or visit their website at www.stoneridgeweddings.nz.

By Kay Peterson, Whakatu Presbyterian Church Earning power has become the new social status, as materialism is now identified as the way to happiness. For many years, people have believed that as their wealth increases they will feel a stronger sense of well-being. Yet money beyond a certain level has been shown to have no influence on happiness at all. In fact, it appears that the opposite is true and as our wealth increases, our happiness decreases. Money is not the solution, but part of the problem. The desire for money is a kind of virus which increases our emotional distress through placing a higher value on acquiring money and possessions, acquiring social status and desiring to be famous. This leads to an increase in incidents of stress, depression and even illness. We live in a world of astonishing choice, and yet all the signs suggest there is something missing. When we abandon a faith-based world view and adopt a science-based one we leave a hole that cannot be filled; we live in an age of dissatisfaction.

This shows in the increase in spiritual experimentation as people attempt to find answers to their questions. We now have a culture in which ‘spirituality’ has become something everyone wants, even though there is considerable confusion as to what it is and what avenue we might take to find it. People are searching for answers they cannot find in the material things of this world. Jesus Christ said, “You cannot worship both God and money.” So we should not be surprised to find that a relationship with Jesus acts as the ultimate vaccine against materialism. The only real spiritual nurture is found in Jesus Christ. People don’t expect to find the answers to their questions in our churches, yet that is where they can hear the good news that Christians have received and where they can encounter Jesus. An encounter that will fill them with the peace and joy only God can give them. For Jesus said, “Come to me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”

Visitor centre volunteer says goodbye after 28 years Simon Bloomberg There’s going to be “a wild party” at the Richmond Visitor Information Centre this Wednesday when its longest serving volunteer, Hazel Bartlett, retires after 28 years of handing out maps, giving directions and recommending tourist destinations. Hazel is one of the founding volunteers, starting when the centre opened in a small Skyline shed on Gladstone Rd on Wednesday December 16, 1987. She has been at the centre most Wednesday mornings since, as well as “helping out” on more than a few Saturday mornings, but this Wednesday will be her last. “I saw a notice council put in our rates notices asking for people to volunteer for the information centre and I thought it would be a good idea,” Hazel recalls. “I belonged to the YMCA walking group at the time and four or five of us from the group volunteered, but now there’s only two of us left.” Hazel says the first information centre was so small it could only fit two visitors inside. It also lacked a toilet and running water. “It was a small Skyline shed and by the time there was a table, two chairs, two volunteers inside you

Hazel Bartlett, right, and Elaine Salvador at the Richmond Visitor Information Centre last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. could only fit two more people in it. In those days, we were really busy and we could get up to 70 people in a morning, so there’d be two people in the shed and a big queue up outside the door.” Hazel says the original building was replaced by an equally small shed relocated from Port Nelson the following year. Fortunately, their working conditions improved when the Rotary Club of Richmond provided the centre’s

present building at 22 Gladstone Rd in December 1989. “It was much bigger and we had our own toilet and running water. We didn’t have to try and dodge the traffic on Gladstone Rd to get to the ladies room.” Not surprisingly, Hazel and her good friend Elaine Salvador, who is also a founding member starting two days after Hazel, have noticed a number of changes over the years. Hazel says the internet

has resulted in a decline in numbers of people stopping at the centre, while the questions have also changed. “We always had lots of questions about the Abel Tasman and walking tracks and things to do in Richmond, but now we are also getting people asking about cycle trails and wineries.” The advent of computer technology and the internet may have resulted in an overall decline in the numbers, but Hazel says it has

also created some extra work for the volunteers. “We often get drivers with computer navigation systems confusing Beach Rd in Richmond with the one in Tahuna,” she says. They have also had a number of “silly” questions over the years, including one young tourist who was heading south along Gladstone Rd wanting to know how far it was to Picton. Another common request is “where’s the nearest public toilet” when there is one right next door. But now, at 83, and with hearing and eyesight that’s not quite what it used to be, Hazel says “I’ve done my time”. “I have a few senior moments these days when I can’t remember things, so it’s good to have someone else in here to jog your memory. But it’s been enjoyable and very satisfying helping all those people - most of the them are very appreciative of our help. Hazel says the centre’s volunteers will be having “a cup of tea and a few cupcakes” to mark her retirement on Wednesday, with Elaine joking that “it’s going to be a wild party.” Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can call into the centre at 20 Gladstone Rd or phone 543 9521.

drenching (as they grow they develop their immunity to parasites) but lambs and calves will suffer reduced growth rates due to parasites if they are not routinely drenched. Most New Zealand properties will have some degree of resistance to drenches and if one particular type is not working your vet can advise you on alternatives that will work. Attention should be paid to animals in poor body condition, particularly with diarrhoea. If you suspect your animal

is suffering from parasites, contact a vet or bring in a faecal sample for them to test for parasite eggs. Good nutrition helps animals deal with parasites, and you can help prevent infestation by drenching according to product recommendations, rotating pasture for young stock with older animals or different species, keeping grass levels higher to reduce the ingestion of worm larvae. And don’t forget to keep up a regular worming schedule for your dogs and cats too.

Town and Country Vets Whether you own sheep, cattle, horses or goats, Town and Country Vets advise farmers and lifestyle block owners to be vigilant about worms. We have experienced a long, dry period followed by significant rainfall which provides the perfect hatching environment for worm larvae. Particularly prevalent at the moment is Barber’s Pole which poses a serious threat to sheep. It is a blood sucker which means sheep die from loss of blood, and they die quickly. It is extremely prolific – each worm can lay 10000 eggs a day to contaminate pasture, but it can be controlled by the use of long or medium term drenches. Red Cross

Herbflex

What is the Red Cross Organisation? New Zealand Red Cross is part of the largest humanitarian organisation in the world. As a nation we have over 10,000 volunteers, 90 branches and 480 staff, all working towards improving the lives of vulnerable people in our backyard and overseas. What are you involved in locally? Locally, Red Cross is involved with a number of services including meals on wheels, community transport and refugee support. We also offer first aid courses and now have a fantastic new team of highly qualified instructors who would love to see you for your next first aid course.

Not all first aid courses are created equal, but here at Red Cross we pride ourselves on being global leaders in first aid training and have attained the highest accreditation from the NZQA. On this, our 100th centenary year, I would like to sincerely thank all of you who have, and plan on, attended first aid courses with us here at the Red Cross. Without you and your ongoing support we would not be able to carry out the good work that is being done locally, nationally and indeed internationally. It is very much appreciated. For questions or to book please don’t hesitate to contact myself, Aidan Woodward, training coordinator for Nelson/Marlborough on 546 5012 or 0800 RED CROSS.

What treatments are offered through Herbflex? I am a practicing medical herbalist and reflexologist, offering these treatments alongside Reiki and relaxation massage from my clinic in Richmond. Proper training teaches the science of the body and what happens when things go wrong; this allows particular herbs to be selected for the client to treat the cause of the problem as well as the symptoms. Reflexology is also used to treat health conditions by retuning and balancing the body through manipulating and applying pressure to the feet. All my treatments can be combined depending on the client’s wishes. What can the treatments achieve for clients? I have helped people with a range of medical problems

from chronic back pain, incontinence, stroke recovery and sleeping troubles; but the list goes on as Herbflex can help treat any medical condition that you would visit your doctor for, and many people are surprised by how much herbs and reflexology can help them. Why should people consider Herbflex treatments? Herbflex has proven results for its treatments and is a great choice for people wishing to take a more natural approach to health care. Many people still see their doctor for mainstream medication but choose to compliment it with herbal medicine or reflexology. As a medical herbalist, I am trained in the safe use of herbs with prescribed medication.

What are the advantages of hiring equipment over buying my own? The most obvious advantage is that you won’t have to make such a costly outlay to purchase what can often be quite an expensive item. We only stock top quality brands, so you can rest assured that the equipment you hire is the best available and all of our gear is maintained to keep it in top operational condition. How long can I hire equipment? We always work in with our customers, so we make our hire periods work for you. If you only have a

small job to complete, our minimum hire term is 2 hours. If you think your project will take longer then we can hire to you for as long as you require. What if I’m not sure what is the best piece of equipment to do the job properly? We have a background in trades and can offer advice on exactly what you will need. We also make sure you know how to operate the machinery safely and efficiently, with safety gear available and training offered, right down to demonstrations on site.

When is the best time to plant? Now is the best time to plant hardy Native, exotic trees and shrubs, so that roots get established before winter. The plants will be ready to take advantage of spring growth and be well prepared to withstand the dry summer months. Can you help with advise on what plants to put in difficult to grow areas? Some of the plants we grow are very tough and will survive in difficult to grow areas. We are happy to offer any advice that we can.

What is Nurture@Home? We are a locally owned and operated company, created from a passion and enthusiasm for the home-based child sector. We focus solely on the Nelson/Tasman region, meeting the needs of local families and building relationships with the community. Operated by educators from around the community, we are proud to offer a high standard of childcare and generous subsidies to families, making quality childcare an affordable option. Why is Nurture@Home a good choice for my child’s early learning? We give children the freedom to explore in an encouraging and safe environment, and research shows that lower ratios allow children to grow stronger relationships with their carer, enhancing their development.

We support the idea of ‘no cotton wool kids’ by ensuring boundaries are set and safety measures are in place so that children can challenge themselves, learn to bounce back from setbacks and be allowed to experience real life. What does the children’s daily programme involve? A variety of activities reflecting the holistic way children learn and grow from jumping in puddles and climbing trees to reading books and baking. This is enhanced by weekly playgroups and nature play outings; empowering the children with the freedom to explore Nelson/Tasman’s amazing natural environments and foster relationships. We would love to hear from you if you would like to learn more about our services or about a professional career as part of our supportive team.

Adam Styles Creative Metal Can you custom create a design that I bring to you? To put it simply, yes. It is the most frequently asked question I get and I am always keen to take on a project for a client, no matter how unique it may be. People are welcome to come to me with as little as an idea and I can create a design to work to, or if your piece is already drawn up, I will happily bring it to life. I can do anything from entrance gates to custom furniture; specialising in original pieces that will be a real stand out element for your home or property. Custommade furniture or homeware is also a great solution so you ensure you get the exact style and size you want.

Do you have pre-made pieces for sale in your workshop? I have a selection of designs to choose from when it comes to gates, fences and balustrades, and a number of sculptures, furniture and homeware pieces available to be viewed and purchased in my workshop. These pieces can also provide inspiration when looking for ideas for your own designs. When are you open? The workshop is open from Monday to Friday from 8am until 4:30pm, and is now open on Saturday mornings from 9:30am until 12:30pm.

What services does Intensive Carpet Clean offer? We offer a range of carpet and upholstery services, specialising not only in cleaning but also in stain protection. Being independently-owned and operated here in the Nelson area allows us to make the big decisions on how our business is run. This enables us to place a bigger emphasis on building relationships and customer satisfaction, whilst also offering a professional service which doesn’t cost a fortune. Why should I get my carpets cleaned regularly? Daily activity within your home or office can leave your carpets looking discoloured, stained and wornout. Not only are they unpleasant to look at, the build up of bacteria in the fibres can lead to an unhygienic

environment for your family. While many people will not think about calling a carpet cleaner until the damage is visible, dirt granules are constantly building up and are not all removed by a vacuum cleaner. Can you remove pesky stains from my carpets, rugs and upholstery? Having had many years within our industry, we have developed the knowledge and skills required to remove all types of stains. We have invested many hours learning advanced techniques, along with the chemistry skills required for effective stain removal. Although some stains may be permanent, many stains that appear to be so are removable. Our advice is free and we are happy to call by when in your area to have a look free of charge.

Grandmothers from around the region will compete in the 18 hole competition, which will be held at Greenacres Golf club this week with players ages ranging from late 50s to late 80s. “There has been a really good turn-out, numbers have increased from 60 players last year to 97 players this year, the competition is well known as a fun day with great camaraderie among the ladies,” says Greenacres Golf Club Ladies Club Captain, Sally Ussher. The golf club has a strong women’s division and offers a beginners package “Give Golf A Go” programme to help women learn how to play the game. They also have a buddy system

Netballers warm up with tournament Monique Bergman The annual Geraldine Hodgson netball tournament was played at Saxton Courts over Anzac weekend. Thirty-six teams entered in the competition, ranging from junior year 7 school teams through to the top premier grade. The Grade A competition was still strong despite last year’s Premier grade winners, Richmond, noticeably absent from the tournament. That left no surprises with Jacks OPD and Prices battling it out in the final.

The two matches played against each other showed that this year’s competition will be very tough, with a 22-22 score when the teams met during the round-robin and in a highly-contested final, Jacks OPD winning by one point on the final whistle. Stalwart Leanne Cook led from the front at goal attack and Tineill Stevenson proved strong through mid-court for Jacks OPD. The Nelson College for Girls A team held their own in the Grade A competition, showing good potential for the season ahead.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Waimea thump Blenheim side

Waimea Old Boys made a positive start to the cross-over stage of the Tasman Trophy club rugby competition on Saturday, thumping Marlborough team Renwick 755. Although unbeaten Waimea Old Boys was expected to prevail against a winless Renwick, they took longer than expected to hit

top gear. Waimea only led 28-5 at half time and that was after scoring 21 points in the opening 10 minutes. Waimea produced a far more convincing second half, eliminating the errors to score another seven tries and record the round’s biggest win. James Lash, who played at half back before

switching to fullback in the second half, was one of the star performers, scoring four tries. Viliami Lolohea (two), Luca Roden, Joe Mika, Ratu Meli Natoatagane, Ben Coman and Mangisi Kaho also scored. First fiveeighth Rohan Saifoloi had a near-perfect day with the boot, missing only one of his

11 conversion attempts for a tally of 20 points. Waimea plays Moutere at Jubilee Park this Saturday. Waimea Old Boys senior B beat Rangers 91-12 in their division two match, while a Waimea College Old Boys under-19 team lost to Waimea College 1st XV 48-7.

Two Waimea Old Boys JAB sides played out a pre-season game at Jubilee Park in the pouring rain on Monday. The two teams, Waimea White and Waimea Red, both play in the intermediate 2 grade and got some valuable match-day practice ahead of the start of the season this weekend. Photos: Vicki Rose.

Almost 300 junior rugby players ready to kick off Simon Bloomberg The future of Waimea Old Boys looks assured, with 19 teams and 270 players taking the field when JAB rugby kicks off this Saturday morning. The number of junior players, from under-six to under-13, playing for Waimea Old Boys has

been increasing for the last five years and the club’s JAB chairman Jeremy Salton says that growth has continued this season. Although the club has one less JAB team than last year, it has more players and is still the biggest junior club in the region. “We have two under-6 teams and three teams in each grade up to

SG

SG

under-13 which is the intermediate age team,” Jeremy says. “We are the biggest JAB in Nelson.” Although they have 19 teams, Jeremy says the club hasn’t had any problems getting enough coaches and managers. He says they are always well supported by enthusiastic parents, with many of the coaches stay-

ing with a side right through the grades. “We are real community-based club and get good support from parents. We have five or six coaches there now who have been with their sides since under-six.” Jeremy says the only setback was the lack of numbers in the proposed college grade under-14

team. The club was set to take over that grade under a new arrangement with Waimea College, but couldn’t get the numbers to make up a team. The JAB season starts this Saturday with all the teams playing at Jubilee Park on their Club Day on June 27.

Planning for Brightwater and Wakefield’s future

Proposed Road Closures

The Council is planning for long-term population and business growth in Brightwater and Wakefield. To support this conversation with residents and businesses we have prepared a strategy and a draft plan change for each township. This stage builds on last year’s conversations with the community using those as a base for this next step in the planning. Within both documents we are looking to address the current issues including; • managing flooding and its associated risks, • more open space and walkways, and • identifying the best place for residential and business opportunities. If you would like a say on what the future could look like for Brightwater and Wakefield there will be two information sessions and presentations: • Monday 4 May at Brightwater School Hall for Brightwater Info session 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm, and evening presentation 7.45 pm (following the Community Association monthly meeting) – 9.15 pm • Thursday 14 May at the Wakefield Fire Station for Wakefield Info session 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm and evening presentation 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm. Information is also available on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz We are accepting comments until Tuesday 9 June 2015. For more information about the strategy and draft plan change please contact: Rose Biss, Ph. 03 543 8421 – for Brightwater. Shelagh Noble, Ph. 03 543 7229 – for Wakefield.

In accordance with the Transport (Vehicle Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the public is advised that for the following roads are proposed to be closed to ordinary vehicles for the periods and times indicated below.

This proposed bylaw is available for you to have your say – further consultation closes at 4.30 pm, Monday 11 May 2015. Amendments to the proposed bylaw publicly notified in December 2014 have been made. The amendments relate to the distinction between, and requirements for, permitted activities, registered trade waste activities, conditional trade waste activities, and prohibited waste. Businesses or community facilities that only have conveniences such as toilets, kitchenettes, and/or staff rooms are not now considered producers of trade waste. Many trade waste activities now simply need to register their activity with the Council. Trade waste activities that are likely to have an adverse affect on the wastewater system will need a trade waste permit. A statement of proposal is available for viewing on the Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz and at all Council offices, Service Centres, and Libraries during normal opening hours. If you have any questions regarding the bylaw or the consultation process, please contact Daryl Page on Ph. 03 543 7264 or Email: daryl.page@tasman.govt.nz
